Obtain Coaching License. Beginning in August 2001, the state soccer association requires all coaches (Recreation and Select) to have a "Y1" license. The Y1 (former G License) certification is a three-hour course including curriculum such as warming up, non-drill exercises, first aid and small-sided games. Plan on being on the field for two hours and classroom for one hour. This course does not have an examination and is free of charge to MKsc coaches. Please contact the Director of Coaching to help find a clinic.
The E License course is a general certification of 11-a-side youth play and will prepare coaches for training players U14 and younger by providing activities that enhance technical competence while addressing some tactical concepts.
The D License course will prepare coaches for training U15 and above players by expanding the players' tactical awareness and development of their technical abilities. It will provide the framework and understanding of practical coaching methods for the preparation of players and teams. This course also serves the coaches for whom this represents their final coaching course as well as those who plan to pursue a national license.
Attend Pre-Season Coaches Meeting.
Promote Good Sportsmanship. Players, parents and coaches should all respect their team mates, opponents, and referees. As coach, you are the lead example, and are responsible for the behavior of your teams and families.
Ensure Player Safety. Injuries will occur during the course of a soccer season. However, the coach should take steps to avoid unnecessary and/or serious injuries by eliminating excessive rough play during practice and games. Also, hanging on goals by any player is very dangerous and strictly forbidden.
Do Not Leave Young Players Unsupervised. There must be at least two adults present at all practices and games. In no case, should a coach leave a young player alone at a field.
Attend Skills Sessions. Each team will be will have an opportunity for special skills training, usually two to three nights per season. These sessions are critical to improvement of the player skills, and are also designed to involve and train the coaches. These sessions can take the place of one of the practices in a given week.
Have Fun.
